Thanks Pete. This was a very thorough review. Prior to watching your UA-cam video I watched another piano sample library review and bunch of comments from that UA-cam video and also some forum comments were favoring Keyscape as the best piano (other than Pianoteq which I keep coming across) and your in-depth and useful comparison (playing exactly the same notes for several libraries quickly back to back) showed me that Keyscape has limited sample details both for the attack and the body, as well as being more compressed sounding (less dynamic). It has a good attack character though so I imagine it sits well in the mix. To me, listening to your playing , I think American Steinway is the best choice for a solo piano because it almost has all the balance and abundance of fullness, details of harmonics, nice core tone character, and musical sounding attack and sustain with lots of musical expressiveness and good dynamic range but without the harshness and metallic attack of German Steinway model D. I think Bosendorfer has more of everything but to a point that is not a typical go-to piano anymore. I'm sure it has its place for some pieces. The other one that is almost there for me is Grandeur but while you were playing I heard something that sounded a bit like processed sustain (around 18:55). It could have been the way low mid frequencies are resonating the body or something like that and got picked up a bit too much by the microphone. Anyway, I'm probably nitpicking. Noire sounds nice but I don't know if the objective of this sample library is having lots of sample details to make a good bread and butter piano or they took away something from what Grandeur offers by means of sample details, dynamic layers, etc. and instead added tone shaping features to make it like a specialty thing, and I think the rest of the piano libraries are kind of specialty piano sounds. Thanks again. The other issue is how well they respond by different MIDI keyboards. I know the ones I tried on a hammer action 88 key keyboard and then later with a synth action MIDI keyboard (I don't have the luxury of that hammer action most of the time) sounded and felt like night and day. So the other criteria is which sample library sounds good and has a good playability in a wide range of possibilities of MIDI keyboards which may not be necessarily the best sounding sample library on a great hammer action 88 key MIDI keyboard.

Why does it sound out of tune?

Interesting but hard to watch.with sustained interest. Too much talk is never a good thing in music. As with many of these videos, you cannot actually make good on the title's promise of 'how to write like' Steely Dan. That is nonsense. The whole theory behind the chord structures is for analysts who very often, are not themselves innovative players or writers. Rather, they tend to be teachers. I've managed on my own over the years to learn Steely Dan's chords and that way, at least to me, makes much more sense.

Back again to enjoy this and share it with friends. Wonderful. 🙂

Thanks for your content! I'm trying to have a minimal setup and have been deciding between a Montage M, YC88, and Nord State 4. If the Montage M were the only piano in my home (besides a couple of the Refaces, which I love), how would it function as an all around practice piano / sound design instrument? In particular, I noticed when demoing it a Guitar Center that the keys seemed a tad bit more narrow than a regular piano. How do you find the narrowness of the keys? BTW, I'm far from a professional musician and am instead an enthusiastic hobbyist who likes to split his time between jazz/blues/gospel/neo-soul piano and synthesis

Dear Pete, I would like to thank you very much for your series of four demos about the Montage M8x! I live in Germany and had to wait three months from order to delivery of the instrument. I had no opportunity to try it before and test it at a dealer. All the more I was happy to learn the instrument in advance via videos and demos. And I find your demos really excellent. It is not only your expertise and your approach to this instrument but also the heart and soul, that you put into this videos. And this seems to be rather rare. Thanks for clarifying the concept that these evolution are objects. That makes complete sense and a problem for transcription. I have to wonder if AI could be used to analyze the object, isolate the sounds and transcribe what's heard into a midi file - which could then aid in the scoring to paper process?
